Convent Kestrels

Even more impossible to see than any other raptor if there's a hatch are the kestrels. Without a camera inside the nest, you just cant tell if there are young until they are near fledging. The behavior of birds with young is the only tell-tale way of gauging whether or not there have been hatches. One sure way is watching what is being brought into and out of the nest. Here the male kestrel calls the female to get a young bird. Instead of in my previous kestrel video of the male going into the nest, in this case she flies out to get the food. She then collects it and then flies back into the scrape with out the male. He then follows later. This is a really good sign there's chicks in there. This video also demonstrates the Canon EOS autofocus problem with object (birds) in motion. I have the perfect shot of the male and female together at the scrape, but my camera just wouldnt focus on the action. But you make do with what you have...

There's definitely at least one chick up there but it may still be a week or so before visible.

All-In-One

Spent the whole morning at St. John on Friday and was treated to just about every single type of red-tailed behavior. The first clip is of the female casually sallying off the nest to kill a sparrow in a tree near the nest. She then flies back with it to feed the young. I also got clips of one of the babies preening and the mom being harrassed by a mocking bird. All in all it was a perfect day with fantastic conditions. Looking forward to watching this nest in the coming weeks!

It will be a while before they are visible, but based on the way this jays been picked apart, Id say they are about a week or so old.

Hammer Time!

Definitely at least one chick in the nest although it might be another week before visible. One of the things that I like so much about this nest is that both parents are extremely vocal...giving the Keeyar pretty much on each pass of the nest. I wonder if they are warning everyone not to come close?
